So I've been owing you all this update BIG time. These are the results of the the juice fast I did a couple of months back. Although my fast got cut short due to my uterus kicking me (haha), it was still a great experience. You can watch the full story on the video below.

Don't forget that you can get my free E book on "How To Do a 10 Day Juice Fast". Click HERE to do so!

I hope you enjoyed that, let me know if you have any questions and connect with me in any of my social networks (all links are on the side tab). Also I want to post information in a way that is easiest for you to view, so I want to ask - do you prefer videos or written posts? Let me know!

Until next time,

Today is my day off and it has been beautiful so far. Kicking brunch off with this yummy banana - cranberry - blueberry smoothie!

  •  1 banana
  •  1/2 cup blueberries
  • 1/2 frozen cranberries

You may want to add orange juice, nut milk, or yogurt (if not vegan) but you don't have to.

Smoothies are my favorite go to breakfast, they are easy, quick, and you can take them to go!

"Where do I start with Lorena. I first met her, or I should say, swept by her beauty at an event held in Toronto. We never spoke but somehow, sometime later we became friends on Facebook. I do, every now and then creep on her page, especially when I need a good pick me up. She always writes inspiring status’ and eventually I began landing on her blog. She probably doesn't know it but I read it religiously.
When I saw that she was going on another juice cleanse, I was amazed at her commitment. Lorena is beautiful and I love her passion for living a healthy lifestyle. She inspired me to start looking at what I put in my body and allowed me to push myself to go on a juice cleanse."

The rain has stopped for a few days, although we do have it forecast for the weekend, and the heavy grey clouds in the sky are a good reminder of that. Today's outfit is pretty much all either thrifted or hand-me-downs in bright colors to contrast the dull morning weather.

The top, loafers, and necklace were all thrifted. Can I just go on a rant on how much I love thrifting?! I LOVE THRIFTING - entering the store, going through racks and racks, trying on all sorts of clothes, and then finding those true gems, for ridiculously low prices. Love it, love it all... *sigh - okey I'm done haha!

My favorite part of this outfit however has be to these gorgeous white bottoms. If you look closely you will notice a flower pattern. These pants make me feel ultra femenine and pretty. It really is all about the details. I actually got these pants from my mom. They didn't fit her anymore and thought that I would like them - Thanks mom! The funny thing is that they are so long on her that she needs to wear heels, it goes to show you how much taller than her I am haha.

Anyhow, that's all for today - hope you have a wonderful day!

Today has been a crazy mix of pouring rain and sunshine, it feels like the weather just can't seem to make up it's mind. Funny enough that's how my own mood has been. There is so much going on, and I anticipate July to be a really busy month so I've gone from feeling excited, to anxious about getting stuff done yesterday as soon as possible. When it all gets to be too much, I am learning to take deep breaths and find the quietness and stillness at the bottom of each breath. It helps.

Today's outfit is definitely more on the boho side. I would say that my style in general is boho-chic, but my closet is quite eclectic, multi-decade, and multi-styles. This morning I was definitely feeling boho, so I grabbed my kimono and draped it over solid black . As I was browsing H&M recently I came upon this gorgeous neck-piece and I swooned - you guys already know how I feel about statement necklaces - best part about it, it was on sale! I was one happy girl. I love how well it goes with my super soft  kimono - pair that is a super afro-ey mane (courtesy of the humidity and rain) and I'm good to go!

I made these beauties yesterday, and they were a total experiment. I had about 2 cups left of my gluten-free pancake mix and thought I'd make myself some pancakes with a twist. I've made pancakes without eggs or dairy before and used apple sauce to make them fluffy - unfortunately I had no apple sauce, so I had to work with what I had.

That's when I had the idea of using the ingredients that I usually put in my morning shake into the pancake mix. I had no guarantee that it would work, but it totally did! Next up, the recipe!

  • 1 cup of gluten-free pancake mix
  • 1 cup of almond milk
  • 1 scoop of Vanilla-Chai Vega One
  • 1 tsp. of organic Matcha
  • I used Earth's Balance "butter" to cook the pancakes
  1. Mix the ingredients together (I use my Vitamix to blend them into a smooth consistency)
  2. Heat up a flat skillet or pan and grease it with Earth's Balance
  3. Pour some pancake mix (if you want larger pancakes pour more, if you want thinner smaller ones pour less)
  4. Cook until bubbles begin to appear and pop on the pancake surface then flip
  5. Cook until the bottom looks cooked, remove from pan and serve
I topped mine off with some fruit and coyo - but you can top it off with anything you like!

What I love about these pancakes is that not only do they look and taste great, they are super good for me. Matcha is an antioxidant powerhouse that helps fight cancer, burn fat, detoxes, and gives energy. The Vega One Powder is a one-stop for all the nutrients I need in the morning. It has 50% daily intake of vitamins and minerals, 15g protein, 6g fibre, 1.5g Omega-3, Antioxidants, Probiotics, and a full serving of Greens. Basically, my morning is all set!

Would you guys try these, or is the green too weird for you? I hope you give them a chance,  not only are the delish, but your body will thank you for them!

You already know I love me some prints and bold colors, but I equally love simple and clean outfits. Today was a classy & clean sort of day - my simple outfit was paired with an equally simple and fresh face.

Today was pouring at times and yours truly got caught in the rain and got soaked - believe it or not, this pictures were taken shortly after coming home, by this time I was semi-dry. Gotta love thin fabrics, they are fresh and dry right up!

Nothing says summer to me more than color, patterns, crazy hair, and a fresh face - I also took the scissors to my hair - shorter hair is so much easier to manage in super hot weather (plus about three inches of my hair were dead). I spent all last weekend prettying up my room, the pictures don't really show the whole thing so you'll have to take my word when I tell you that it is beautifully organized and arranged in a feminine and fresh way - it got me feeling all womanly and stuff!

Today I wasn't feeling particularly beautiful, been struggling with not seeing super fast results in my weight loss, and I was feeling all plumply and stuff. As soon as I realized that my inner dialogue was not positive I decided to consciously change it. I am so much more than my weight - I am a well thought-out and intricate creation of the same One who made all the beautiful things in this universe. My body simply houses my spirit and soul, and while I want to strive to take care of it, it should not be an obsession! What do you girls/guys do to change negative internal dialogue? I'd love to hear it, maybe pick up a thing or two from you!

I'm quite a private person when it comes to my family and relationships but I couldn't keep myself from sharing these pictures from our most recent retreat up north. Gosh this man makes me giddy! He really is proof that this verse is true "Delight yourself in the Lord; and He will give you the desires of your heart." Psalm 37:4

I get complimented most often on two things: my hair & my skin. I get lots of questions about how I keep my skin glowing and fresh, so I thought I'd write a quick blurb on the face situation.
  1. It all starts from within - I am super prone to breakouts/blackheads/whiteheads/etc. so it is really  important that I eat well, drink lots of water, supplement my diet as needed, and get at least 7 hours of sleep every night.
  2. Skin care - I actually don't use a face wash, instead I opt for a clean face cloth and water. Once a week I exfoliate with baking soda and then put on honey as face mask for about 3 minutes. I use a moisturizer with SPF and sometimes I use eye cream or a night cream. Recently I've started using a natural astringent to help when I feel my face is super oily.
  3. Make-up - I am a big fan of a natural glow, minimal look. My 5 must haves are:
  • Groomed brows - courtesy of my awesome eyebrow lady & a good brow pencil
  • Concealer - I have a trio concealer with a peach/salmon color, a super light yellow, and one that matches my skin color. I use the peach/salmon to neutralize any under-eye darkness, the yellow as a highlight on the top of my cheekbones, my brow bone, and the bridge of my nose, and finally I use the skin color to conceal any spots or blemishes.
  • Loose powder - this helps to keep my concealer in place and minimize any shine on my face.
  • Bronzer/Blush - I use these two interchangeably - sometimes alone, sometimes together. Either way, I try to only use as much as I need.
  • Lip balm - Lately I've been getting into the whole bold lip thing, but on most days you would find me rocking a natural lip.
So there you have it, this is my simple, fresh-face, glowy everyday look. It is a mix of healthy skin and some outside tricks!

Between major cravings and Mother Nature's curve balls, it has been a challenging last bit. I am thankful for the people in my life who support and encourage me, they have definitely helped get me through these past few days! Watch the full update below :)

Hi friends, here is an update on my juice fast - listen till the end to find out why I had to juice so much produce yesterday!

As always, I appreciate your encouragement and questions!

Saturday, May 24, 2014

I had to use up all the produce I had before I get to buy more - this is all I had, and it all worked out quite nicely. Here is my update for day 2 of my 10 day juice fast.

Friday, May 23, 2014

I have been BAD to my body for some time now, so I have decided to push the reset button and do a short cleanse. It will consist of 20 day in total - 10 days of juice fasting and 10 days of juice + fruits. Today was day 1 and here is my update - the video is a bit quiet because I recorded it at night and was trying to be mindful of the familia.

So this past weekend the super sweet Mr. Man helped me to plant my very first garden in my backyard. The hardest part was getting the soil ready, but after that , it was all fairly simple and very fun.

I am growing some personal faves such as kale, celery, zucchini, cilantro, and pepper. I'm super excited to grow my very own organic produce, I can't wait! Mr. Man, thank you, you scored major points here.

Hi friends, today The Glowing Diaries turns a year old! It's been a crazy awesome year and I've truly enjoyed having the opportunity to share with the world things that make me excited, happy, passionate and encouraged. I have also really treasured this space where I can share my journey towards a better Lorena, whether it's through juicing, eating a plant based diet, connecting with my Creator, or doing girly things like whipping up some all-natural facials.

I want to thank every one of my readers that has sent me encouraging words when I needed them and kudos when you were proud of me. My hope for this next year is that as I continue to grow and expand as a person, so will this blog. I have many ideas, and am always open to hearing suggestions from you!

With lots of love,

Hi friends! It's final assignments and exam time but I wanted to quickly share a brand new original smoothie recipe. This smoothie is not only delicious but it has really powerful anti-inflammatory properties! I made after researching ingredients that could reduce the amount of prostaglandins in my body that are causing me some serious cramps! It's rough being a girl sometimes but it is great to know that we have an amazing natural pharmacy all fresh from the ground!

Here are the ingredients:

• 2 oranges (peeled and cut)
• 3/4 cup of frozen mango
• 1/2 cup of frozen cranberries
• 1 banana
• 1/2 tsp. of turmeric
*add water to achieve the consistency you like - makes approx. 1 liter.

All the ingredients I used I chose specifically for their anti-inflammatory properties, although I am using this smoothie to relieve my period cramps, you can use it for any inflammatory issues you have such as arthritis!

That's all for now, I hear assignments calling my name... Let me know if you try this smoothie, would love to hear what you think!

Sending you lots of love,

So I stepped on the scale this morning - the numbers staring back at me did not surprise me, I had suspected them - nonetheless I was temped to panic. My scale read 90.7kg , not my highest weight ever but definitely up there.

For those who followed my juice fast and saw that I lost a whole pile of weight and are wondering how much of that I've put back -  yup, I've gained it all back and then a 2.5 more. Am I disappointed? Yes, but not at the juicing - it did what it was supposed to do - reset my body, and then it was up to me to continue on my health journey.

I have been real with you since the very beginning and shared with you that getting off my juice fast was hard, and it's been a tough journey ever since. Truth is, I have weight and body issues, but more important I have self-worth and confidence issues - I have been confronted with this truth over the past couple of months.

I am realizing that I have no problem with loosing the weight, and even less of a problem with putting it back on. Diets have been a part of my life since my early teens, diet pills, starving myself, purging... I've done it all.

Juicing was the very first thing I've ever done for myself that wasn't all about loosing weight and was more about really wanting to start to care for myself and my health. Being plant based for a year now has been also part of the plan to be healthy and was never done out of ethical motives, and while that may sound selfish, I think it is important to love one selves as much as we love animals.

Being plant based however has not been all healthy - I have eaten so many fries because at times they were the only things on the menu that I could eat - this has made me unhappy. At some point it started being about what I couldn't eat and not abut what I could.  There's got to be a better way and I am asking God to give me the wisdom needed to figure things out, one step at a time.

Today is April first and this is the last month of my 26th year - I want to take this month to take back control of my health, body, and spirit. I am starting it with 10 days of reboot, a gym membership, and some serious support. Most importantly I am asking God to help me to see my worth and heal much of the devastation that has occurred in my heart, soul and spirit as a result of much hurt and harm. Also for the first time ever I am open to seeing someone to talk to about my past - this is a pretty big deal.

I know that arriving to a healthy place for my heart, soul, and body won't be a quick fix, that it will take time, and that it may be hard, but I have no choice but to trust the process and my heavenly Father's promise that he who started His good work in my will finish it!

Anyhow, that's all for now - I've spilled my guts quite a bit, but I wanted to share this with you - it's a journey, and journeys are always better when shred with others!

I will try to keep you updated, until then, Glow!

"Your people will rebuild the ancient ruins and will raise up the age-old foundations; you will be called Repairer of Broken Walls, Restorer of Streets with Dwellings." Isaiah 58:12

Anyone who has ever struggled with depression, the blues, or just been having a really rough time for a while can appreciate the gift of a "good day". Today I'm reflecting on what makes me happy, and the importance of not muting who I am to make others happy.

What makes YOU happy?

Through the valley of shadows and death she walked
Feeling cold and bare
With a heavy blanket of sorrow hiding her nakedness
Her soul broken,
Her breath frail,
And her spirit fainting

No sense of hope, no point of direction
The tenebrosity of the night deprived her of her senses
Fumbling and stumbling as she ran directionless into the abysm of seclusion...
I’ve heard about this place, and its quiet torments
It is enough to drive the sound of mind to the edge of insanity
And render the vigorous into feebleness

Slowly she felt the nectar of her life slowly slipping away
No desire to die but no reason to live
Alone and abandoned
Sun sinking behind the high mountains
And fog engulfing her soul
Her biggest fears drowning her
Her pain taunting her
And evil whispers daring her to give up
Calling her into the darkness with no return
Completely loosing all sense of balance and sanity
She fell into a deep deep hole

She almost let go of her spirit
And surrendered to despair

Then she remembered…
She remembered those whom she loved
Those whom she knew loved her

See, the shadows have a way of obscuring the reality of life
And in the dusk of the night, giving in to the darkness is only too tempting
Escaping is only too easy
Instead of standing up and putting up a fight…

She knew she must get up…
She tried and she tired, but every time she tumbled and fell back in
The void she had fallen into appeared to have no way out…
Her body was now bloodied and her eyes could not muster a single more tear
With a broken body and a crumbling spirit
She mustered out the only words she could
Help me she said, someone please …
Help… me…
The last word barely made its way out…
As she dozed off into an unconscious sleep

In the denseness of the night,
She suddenly felt warmth cover her cold body
An outstretched hand appeared
Her eyes looked up to meet a pair of caring eyes.
There was hope and love in his gaze
The friendly stranger took her hand
And as their fingers touched,
A jolt of energy ran through every nerve in her body
A sense of rejuvenation
She let him clean her bloodied body
And mend her broken spirit
Although afraid, she took his hand
And slowly let him guide her through the fog.

With every step she took
A bit of life re-entered her body
As the sun started to rise and the night subsided,
She realized she was standing on a high peak
High above where she had been before
Her sadness was suddenly a remote memory
And a profound exhilaration overtook her
She suddenly remembered the gracious stranger
She turned around wanting to embrace and thank him
But he was nowhere to be found
Instead she saw a note that said:
“As I have done for you, never hesitate to outreach your hand
To a weary traveler passing through the valley of shadows and death”

I now ask You, dear reader... are YOU willing to be that outstretched hand to someone in need?

Written by Lorena Monroy © 2009

I wrote this back in 2009 when I had finally decided to ask for help - the girl in this poem is clearly me - and this poem was a very hopeful forbearing of the healing and restoration that has occurred in my life since then.

I spent all of my teens and early twenties severely depressed and suicidal. Attempted suicide multiple times. Anxiety controlled my life. I struggled with eating disorders. I abused substances. I self-harmed. No one knew, until it got really bad. Acknowledging that I was hurting and being willing to talk about it was the first step towards healing. I am still on my healing journey. Some days depression and anxiety still try to bring me down, but I have learned that there is hope, there is healing, and there is a future for anyone who has ever suffered or is still suffering from any mental health challenges.

Mental Health Week is happening right now. I hope that my story gives hope to anyone who needs it right now. If you know anyone that is struggling with a mental health illness, please don't turn a blind eye. There is help, there is hope, and a future for anyone who is feeling like there is not.

In an effort to start caring for myself again, I have decided to take control of my health again - this time in "bite-sized" ways. Last year was all about doing pretty extreme things like my 60 day juice fast, and announcing that I was going to run my first marathon in May 2014 (oh boy...)

While the 60 day juice fast was totally awesome and successful, setting a marathon goal totally wasn't. I tend to be an all-or-nothing person, and many times the things I attempt to do end up hurting me.

My mentor once told me that I need to work on creating habits that are sustainable, I want to apply this to my health and fitness this year.

I want to kick start this with a good ol' juice fast - but only a tiny one - 10 days. After that I plan to start training for my first long distance run, which won't be a marathon, but a 10K run in April. I'm thinking that depending on how that goes, I'd like to train for a half marathon in October. My marathon goal is still very much alive, but I am realizing that I'm going to have to take my time with that.

So, today is day 2 of this mini juice fast and I thought I'd show you what I made! Here are my drinks for today...

So there you have it folks, I'm just here, taking a small step in what I hope is the right direction! I'll keep you posted on how the juicing goes :)
